BKM plans to significantly weaken the independent scene

Press Release

Hamburg, 05.08.2024. The stage union GDBA is appalled by the plans of the Federal Government Commissioner for Culture and the Media to cut funding for the Federal Cultural Fund by half for 2025, even though it is to be provided with 50 million more funds.

One of those to suffer is the Performing Arts Fund. Almost 50% less funding is to be made available to it, meaning that it will have to cut three of its six innovative funding programs and significantly reduce funding in the remaining programs. The GDBA is a member association of the Fonds Darstellende Künste and has been working with the fund to promote the independent arts and cultural scene for around 40 years.

In addition, funding for the alliance of international production houses (Kampnagel Hamburg, HAU Berlin, Künstlerhaus Mousonturm Frankfurt, PACT Zollverein Essen, HELLERAU Dresden, FFT Düsseldorf and tanzhaus nrw) is to be cut completely.

The Fonds Darstellende Künste and the international production houses are indispensable for a high-quality independent cultural scene and thus also for the professional existence of excellently trained artists and thus also for a large number of GDBA members.

"These plans will drive many artists into social benefits. And this despite the fact that many, many associations have been fighting for years for the major innovation issues of our time and therefore also for improved working conditions," says Lisa Jopt, Executive President of GDBA.

The Commissioner for Culture and the Media, Claudia Roth, had only just introduced the binding fee floors, thereby strengthening the future of many artists.

The plans that have now been published represent a 180-degree turnaround and contradict the coalition agreement, which envisaged strengthening the Federal Cultural Fund and international production houses as drivers of innovation.

As funding for the BKM is increasing at the same time, the reduction in federal cultural funds is all the more incomprehensible.

The GDBA calls on the BKM to urgently revise the plans for the coming year and not to unnecessarily jeopardize the future of a free cultural landscape in Germany and thus restore the trust that has now been lost.
